Mallorcan House 01

A family home, perched on a rocky outcrop in Mallorca takes advantage of the incredible views across the Mediterranean and of the rocky, sandstone cliffs. Wedged between imposing, sandstone formations the U-shaped house is a memory of the traditional Spanish courtyard house - but with a protected pool at its centre. Bedroom wings to one side, living/dining/kitchen wing to the other - with 300 days of sun a year, they are connected simply via an open covered walkway. Earthen and robust, the home is both protective, resilient and minimal in its expression allowing the occupants to adorn its walls and surfaces with their collections from near and afar.

Mallorcan Traditional marés House

Located at the base of the Tramuntana, this home is a warm and inviting sanctuary. It takes many cues from the traditional Mallorcan homes constructed primarily of marés - the local and abundant sandstone of the area.

Monolithic and robust, the home - like many of the buildings of Spain and the locality - is a collage of openings, cutaways and entrys that reflect their hierarchy, importance and position: A large arched entry door leads out to the pool to the rear, controlled punched openings for windows - some with planter or balconette.

Some of these familiar forms are subjected to an additional layer of sculptural nuance - which are both a nod to the traditional forms and vernacular, and a play on making a seemingly unmalleable material - stone - plastic-like with curves, inflexions, and a peeling-away affect to reveal another window on the side of the house.

The building sits quietly, but confidently, into its olive tree surrounds, with ceremonial reflections pools at the entry.

Clifftop House - NSW

Perched on the edge of a stunning clifftop and overlooking the bay along the southern NSW coast, this significant renovation/rebuild replaces the existing home with a contemporary and lightfilled sanctuary.

Where previously the living quarters were upstairs, and the sleeping quarters downstairs, this redesign sees those two programs flip. The living spaces are now located at ground level with a seamless connection to the outdoors and the striking coastal environment.

A variety of handcrafted bricks used in an intricate and versatile manner characterise this new abode. Earthy tones both externally and internally create a sense of warmth and coastal comfort.
